Samsung BDP3600 Blu-ray Player CustomerReview

I got this player because of it’s Netflix and Pandora capabilities. This player has never failed me at all. The initial set-up and firmware upgrade was a little challenge, nevertheless I got through it just fine. The moment the player was connected to the wifi the firmware upgrade automatically prompted. Understanding the manual and following it correctly is crucial.

It’s wifi capability greatly depends on the seed subscription. I have the most basic plan from verizon, nevertheless my wifi works just fine with this player. I already have around 5 gadgets hooked up to it including this one. (The walls is one great factor that slows down wifi speed.)

Hooking this up to a home network requires a little computer knowledge. Setting this up is done not only in the player but in the pc as well.

A better choice player form me because of it’s price, features and speed, set up however is for the techy.

Samsung BD-P3600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Worst product ever – Paul D. Green – Spring Branch, TX, United States
They call this a Blu Ray player. Only I’d never know it. Cause it will only load Blu Ray disks .5 out of 10 times. I’ve upgraded the firsmware 3 times in the 6 months I’ve owned it. We’ve rented disks — it won’t play them. We’ve bought disks — it won’t play those either. New disks, old disks, clean disks or dirty disks it’s an equal opportunity no-go. If you are looking for a Blu Ray player… stay away from Samsung. That’s for sure.

Samsung Blu Ray is not dependable. – RogerN –
My wife and I had previously purchased a Samsung blu-ray (1600) and had had a good experience with it. We purchasd the 3600 from Amazon. From the outset, it did not play some bly-ray titles and would skip and stutter as it read the disc. It got worse and worse. I first of all went on line at Samsung for help. They confirmed that I had all the firmware updates and had tested everything appropriately I spent and hour with the person before being told to call Samsung. I called Samsung the next day. The person was very nice, but explained that labor is not guaranteed, just parts after the first 90 days, but within the year warrantee. I spoke with her for half an hour and she indicated that she was going to recommend they extend the labor warrantee and would get back to me after she had checked with a supervisor. I never heard from her. I spent another half hour on the phone a couple of days later, and then was dropped. I called back the next day and was told after sharing all of my information for the fourth time, that the problem was with the firmware and that others were having similar proablems and that a new firmware update would be coming out shortly.

First of all, I have had problems since I purchased it (I should have called on the warrantee sooner). Second, no firmware update has come out.

I purchased another brand of blu-ray for my son in December. He is very happy. I think I will follow suit. My strong advice – Samsung blu-rays are not reliable and I strongly encourage others to not buy them.

Great while it lasted – Robert Schaffer – Los Angeles, CA USA
I bought my unit in April 2009 and was extremely pleased with the video and sound quality. However it just abruptly died in July 2010. It was the first of my many VCR and DVD players to die so I am not naturally pleased with the outcome. I also hear that reliability may be or have been a problem with these units….Unfortunately when I read about all of the units out there in the 0 – 0 price range, the Samsung units keep coming out on top so I will probably buy another one.

The one extreme positive of the unit was the ease in which I could set up Net-Flix and and YouTube. If my next one lasts at least three years I will be very happy.

Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player CustomerReview

I purchased the Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-Ray player shortly after purchasing my first HD TV in January 2010. The TV is a Samsung Plasma unit and I wanted to ensure that both the TV and DVD player were from the same manufacturer, and given the reviews listed here on Amazon, I was cautiously optimisitic that this purchase would turn out well.

After 8 months, I can plainly state that this player delivers as advertised. The picture clarity, resolution and color are all light years better than what I had been watching with my previous player and analog TV.

Admittedly, I am not a techno geek and I always wait until a product cycle has reached a mature stage beforing making a buy. Also, I have watched less than 10 Blu-Ray movies, but the ones that I have watched thus far (Avatar being the most notable), offer picture graphics and quality that exceed anything I have watched in my home and rival movie theatre quality.

Even now, I still catch myself marveling when watching certain movie sequences, especially those that are long view shots as well as close-ups that often depict performer facial imperfections that I had never seen with such clarity before.

My only reservations with this player are as follows:

1) It will sometimes hick up and black out for a moment and switch to one of several other picture settings (i.e. movie to dynamic). This happened last week 3 separate times during one viewing, however it does not occur on a consistent basis.
2) I was forced to call customer service this week when the unit froze and would not respond to manual or remote commands (play, FF, stop). Instead, the readout on the player displayed “CLOSE” instead of going through the typical sequence of upload steps to get to the DVD PLAY mode. After calling the Samsung 800 number and talking to a service techician (very rough english) I had to do the following:

1) Unplug the unit from the power strip
2) Press and hold the power button while unplugged for 10 seconds
3) Plug the unit into the power source
4) Restart the unit with a DVD installed

This fix served to reset the power source and the unit began working again.

I have purposely AVOIDED accepting any firmware upgrades, based on what I have read here at Amazon, so my problem did not require some of the more elaborate fixes that have been documented by others, but the specific fix to my issue was not covered in the owners manual nor could I locate a solution on their website.

In summary, very happy with the players performance but slightly concerned because I sense the technology is still not foolproof and when I spend more than twice what it would cost for a non Blu-Ray DVD player, I expect both performance and long term quality/reliability.

No Stars! Stay Away! – Michael Meehan – Hicksville, NY United States
Absolute garbage, and that’s putting it mildly. Worst piece of electronic equipment I have ever purchased. Constantly frozen and non-responsive to remote. Lasted for only about six months. And during those six months, it only worked occasionally. An extremely aggravating product. Highly recommend a different brand. If zero stars was an option, I would have selected that.

Samsung bd-p1600 past its prime but still works fine – Richard House –
At the time I bought this, it was state of the art. Now, they are more resolution, read, upload, download faster, and are lighter. All in all though, it still does well for most things. Only criticism is that you have to purchase Samsung’s USB WiFi adaptor if you cant connect with a wire for internet access(you dont need internet access for anything but the online services like Netflix). allmost a hundered bucks was a bit much after buying the BD Player check the options of the other players with WiFi built in and account for the price. I wasn’t sure whether to take a chance with this player based on other reviews mentioning the firmware upgrade issues. It’s only been a little over a month now but so far…so good. Video quality of Blu-ray discs are great but more surprising to me was how nice it was on the upscaled DVDs. I also use it with Neflix and the quality is great for that as well. My expereince is that you can not go wrong wi9th samsung products except the refridgerators are hard to get parts for.

DON’T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! – Irene, VB, VA –
I’ve had a BD-P1590. It never worked! I was told by Samsung that I had to download software to correct the problem. I tried three times and it still didn’t work. Then they said they would send me a CD with the software on it. It didn’t work! Then they said they would send it again…it didn’t work! Then the company I bought it from agreed to exchange it for a BD-P1600. It didn’t work! I got about an hour into the first movie and it stopped. The company refused to exchange it again. Samsung said to send it back to them for repair. I got it back three weeks later and guess what…it didn’t work!!! They then told me the only thing they could do is try to repair it again. Again I sent it back. Again I got it back and it didn’t work. Finally they said to sent it back to them and they would finally agree to replace it. I sent it back and now they are saying it will take up to 3 weeks from when I sent it in to get the replacement. All together it has been well over 6 months and I have yet to watch a movie on this blu-ray player. Now they are sending me the BD-C5500. My advice…don’t buy a Samsung. I was told by a salesman that Sony makes all the Samsung players anyway. Maybe they are trying to give Samsung a bad name by making DVD players that don’t work! I have another older Samsung Blu-ray player that works perfectly. Don’t know why the later models don’t work, but apparently they can’t repair them either. I believe that they make people jump through all these hoops before replacing it hoping that they will give up and just go out and buy another one.

Toshiba BDX2000 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player CustomerReview

We bought this player a month or so ago, understanding very well that it has no wireless receiver to access Netflix, Pandora, etc. and firmware updates and nor does it have a USB port. That said, it is a pretty solid entry-level player that we picked up for <0 at Conn’s. However, it does come with a caveat. If you don’t already have a SD card in the slot provided, then IT WILL NOT LOAD YOUR BLU-RAY DISK PROPERLY. I was very eager to play my first ever BD movie and without a SD card, all I could see was a small rectangle in the middle of our TV which showed the video, with the audio playing in the background. I called Toshiba and they said that the player lacked sufficient internal memory and that a SD card with 8GB-32GB capacity should fix the issue. I must say that considering that this model was Toshiba’s first foray into the Blu-Ray realm, they could have included a SD card or at least asked their retailers to convey this very important requirement to their buyers. I have not gotten around to reading the manual, but I’m going to assume they did not mention it there either. Anyway, we ended up spending on a SanDisk 8GB Ultra SDHC card, and once we loaded the card, it worked perfectly. Maybe it is the quality of the SD card or maybe it is the player itself, but the loading time for a BD iss less than 30 seconds. Impressive! The up-conversion of DVD’s to 1080p via HDMI is fantastic, and the BD performance was even better with crisper images and sharper sound without lags, freezing, or skipping of any kind, that I’ve heard being reported about other BD players. I still haven’t figured out how the Regza link works (I have a Toshiba Regza 46SV670U) and am a little skeptical about reviews that mention the player dying out shortly after the warranty period. However, for now, things are as simple as they get with this BD player and we love it!

I cannot reccomend this player – Compatability issues with certain disks – Jason M. Molitor – Waukesha, WI USA
This product works with 60% of the Bluray DVDs out there but on others it will not play them at all. Toshiba has nothing supporting this on their website and they will not release a firmware update. If it does play the disks then it does fine but the fact that it cannot play certain disks is really poor.

Excellent! – David C. –
Good price, timely delivery, easy set-up, easy to use, excellent quality machine.
Have several TOSHIBA electronic devices.

good – Jimmy Hong – Irvine, CA
Received the product on time and the blue ray player does what its supposed to. No problems yet.

Experience Movies Like Never Before

The DMP-BD85 employs the PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. Developed in collaboration with Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory, this high image processing technology reproduces clear, vivid colors that are faithful to the original film.

Panasonic’s Blu-ray Disc players employ high precision 4:4:4 signal technology, which working in tandem with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus processes each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the horizontal direction to compliment vertical direction processing. P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD) is another technology that contributes to the superior picture quality of the Blu-ray players. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel.

Panasonic’s Blu-ray Disc players further utilize 16-level motion detection to categorize the image motion of each pixel into one of 16 levels; diagonal processing to detect diagonals and correct the pixels accordingly; 1080p up-conversion to up-convert content recorded in the 480i/p or 720p format to 1080p.

This Blu-ray Disc player also provides 1080/24p output, reproducing cinema images from a Blu-ray Disc and DVD in their original 24p form with no need for conversion–enabling you to enjoy cinema images in the same format used in cinema with a 1080/24p-compatible TV.

Complimenting the HD audio codecs, the BD85 Blu-ray Disc player features 96kHz surround re-master, a function that enhances the sound quality of CDs and other sources, and even improves the quality of the multi-channel audio data on Blu-ray Discs and DVDs.

Panasonic DMP-BD85K WiFi Enabled Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black) CustomerReview

I had previously had a Sharp blue ray Sharp Aquos BDHP20U 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player from a local dealer. It was great except 8 out of 10 Blue Ray dvd’s would lock the player and I would have to restart, unplug, or get a replacement dvd from Netflix. I had downloaded latest software. I went to dealer twice and it was cleaned and I was told it would get better. NOT.
I got fed up, checked out Consumer Reports, bought the Panasonic and WaLa, it is great. Much faster loading, great picture, no lockups and in addition, connects directly to the web to download any update automatically AND connects to my Netflix and Pandora for downloading movies and music.
It is great and I highly recommend it Panasonic DMP-BD85K WiFi Enabled Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black)

Great deal. – S. Johnson – Earth
I’m very happy with this purchase. It arrived on time and was -50 dollars cheaper ordering it off Amazon rather than in stores in my area. Plays both Blu Ray and DVDs well. My husband is enjoying using it to access internet radio stations and youtube. I can’t wait to get a netflix account so I can download netflix movies to watch on my tv.

Great Blu-Ray! – Richard C. Jamison – Central Florida
I just can’t get enough of NetFlix over Blu-Ray. I just finished the first season of LOST (I know, I’m a little behind). This player is very easy to set-up and use. The network feature immediately found my access point and logged on. I bought a copy of Avatar as my first Blu-Ray media and loved it! Picture and sound were awesome. I hadn’t seen it in the theater. Overall, a great product and of course, Amazon is the best, hands down!

The Right Choice – MICHAEL PETERS –
After over researching blu-ray players with the Netflix ability, I decided on the Panasonic.

It was the right choice, especially for the price. It hooked up to my wireless router with relatively no problem. Netflix streams amazingly clear. Play back of regular DVD’s is great and they load relatively quick. Blu-ray is going to be used this week, can’t wait. All said and done I am very happy with my choice. It’s amazing what features they are putting into these devices today. Now I have an urge to upgrade the TV even though it is only a few years old.

Great… until it died after 7 months – Adam Barnard –
Bought this player at the end of December 2009. My first Blu-ray player, and did online research prior to purchasing it. Loved the Netflix capability, and the speed at which it read the Blu-ray discs. However, starting in late July 2010 it started giving errors when trying to read discs (Blu-ray, DVD, and CD), and now it won’t read any discs (it either says “Disc read error” or simply “No disc”. Obviously I have tried powering it off and on, unplugging, and resetting it, but nothing helped. Did further Internet research and found that other people have had similar failures after only 3+ months. Very disappointing. Will not purchase an LG player again.

LG BD390 no longer plays ANY DVDs – “No Disc” error – J. Wemer –
I bought this LG BD390 in October 2009. Worked well playing Blu-rays and DVDs until last week (7/20/2010). It will no longer recognize any of my DVDs – even brand new ones that have never been opened or played. I started getting a “No Disc” in the upper left-hand corner of the TV with DVDs immediately after closing the tray [with a DVD in the tray]. The DVDs were at least spun as DVD position was changed when opening the tray after receiving the message. It will play all Blu-ray movies fine (still has some issues with Avatar, though). I have the BD390 connected to my network and have the latest firmware version (08.08.531). Contacted LG support to see if there was anything I could do to reset it or troubleshoot and “Gustavao” was not all that helpful. His “support” consisted of asking me to update the firmware version after telling him that I already had the latest version and his cut & paste of what to do with the product ( blah blah). “He” ended the chat session about 30 seconds after his “Hello?” – I had been reading his instructions when he was more than happy to end the session (“excellent service”? I don’t think so….):

Gustavao: Hello Jason Xxxxx. Welcome to LG Electronics! How may I provide you with excellent service today?
Jason Xxxxx: My LG bd390 has stopped playing DVDs. It will play Blu-rays but no DVDs… This just started on Tuesday of last week. Was wondering if there is something I should check that may resolve this? I have tried about 40 undamaged DVDs… It has the latest firmware version (08.08.531 from April 2010).
Gustavao: I see.
Gustavao: Have you tried updating the unit to the latest firmware?
Jason Xxxxx: it says it has the latest firmware version.
Gustavao: Let me get you a link
Jason Xxxxx: I actually tried a DVD it had played the day before it stopped working and it will give me a message that just says “No Disc” in the upper left hand corner of my TV.
Gustavao: Because if there was an issue with the lense, the blu rays would not play either.
Gustavao: [...]
Jason Xxxxx: Blu-rays are working fine in the player…
Gustavao: Search under drivers and software
Gustavao: Try doing this update as stated in the instructions you would be able to get here
Gustavao: Once done, check to see if it helped.
Gustavao: If it in fact still does not work you would want to send it in to us so our techs could check the unit out for you.
Gustavao: It is most likely software related.
Jason Xxxxx: my bd390 is connected to the internet… i tested the connection, it says it is connected, and has the latest firmware version.
Gustavao: Ok.
Gustavao: hmm.
Gustavao: When was the unit purchased exaclty?
Gustavao: Exactly?
Jason Xxxxx: October 2009
Gustavao: Do you have the original purchase receipt still?
Jason Xxxxx: yes
Gustavao: In regards to repairing the unit, first we would send you free shipping labels via email, which you should get it in around 24 to 48 hours. Then you would want to send in the unit, with a copy of the sales receipt. In regards to the payment you would have to ways to pay for the labor, either through credit card or money order. I will also provide you with a case number that should be written on each side on the outside of the box. Please do not send in accessories with the unit (remote control, cables, etc). The labor payment should be in the facility before the technicians start working on the unit and the “repair and return” department will contact you in case there are parts needed for the repair so you can send the money in for the parts if you would like to repair it, if there are no parts needed for the repair, they will go ahead and repair it and send it back to you. This is in case your unit is no longer under the 1 year warranty for parts. For credit card payments you will need to contact our customer service department to the 1-800-243-0000 so you can get in contact with the “repair and return” department specific department that will take your payment. For money order payments, you will need to send it to LG Electronics, Alabama Inc. P.O. Box 240007 Huntsville, AL. 35813-6407. The process should take between 5 -7 business days after we receive the unit. Labor would cost , if you wish to pay via credit card you would need to call in to 1-800-243-0000.
Gustavao: This is the process if you would like to send it in.
Gustavao: In this case since the unit is still under part warranty, the parts should be covered. But you would still have to pay for labor fees since labor warranty was for 90 days.
Jason Xxxxx: ok… will you e-mail me those instructions with the case#?
Gustavao: That would be emailed by the repair and return department.
Gustavao: In from 24 to 48 business hours you should receive the email.
Gustavao: If you would want to send it in, we would need to set it up first.
Gustavao: Hello?
Gustavao: I apologize it appears I may have lost my connection with you. I will remain on the line for approximately 2 minutes before exiting the chat. If you have any additional questions feel free to contact us back via Live Chat or you may call 800-243-0000. Thank you for choosing LG Live Chat.
Gustavao: Unfortunately due to a lack of response your chat session will be ending. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us again via Live Chat or by calling 800-243-0000. Thank you for choosing LG Electronics. We appreciate your business. Have a great day!
Notice: Gustavao has exited the chat session.

So… he notes that Labor is 90 days. I believe I read in one of the reviews someone was told or understood labor to be covered for only 30 days. I don’t feel that great about paying + – for shipping. Basically 0 for something I paid 9 for 9 months ago. A terrible and disappointing purchase even if Blu-rays work, for now. I still have two Sony DVD players I have had for 7 and 4 years that play all of these DVDs fine – not to mention the DVD players in both my Volvo XC-90 and Mercedes ML350.

Correction… This BD390 will no longer play the following Blu-rays and receive a “Check Disc” error:
Into the Blue
Fool’s Gold
The Edge

All are flawless (no prints, smudges, dust, or scratches) and previously worked fine. I only have 24 Blu-rays – the others worked fine with initial (until it shows “Blu-ray Disc” on the screen in the upper left-hand corner) load times from 10 seconds to about 35 seconds.

AVOID LG Blue Ray Players – LG stinks –
About 10 months ago I bought an LG BD390. It was an expensive unit. I thought I was getting a quality player. I had a good DVD player, so it only played a couple new Blue Rays and no DVDs. It has played less than 10 movies. It is basically new.

The unit will no longer read either Blue Ray discs or DVDs. The unit attempts to read the disc and then displays “no disc”. LGs customer support & warranty are basically worthless.

I see many others on the net with similar issues.

I have had DVD players last for years, the reliability of this unit is unacceptable. Save your money and avoid LG!

Unit broke after less than six months and infrequent use – Alexandgus –
I purchased this unit at Bestbuy. The setup was relatively easy, although the remote is a pain, and it would be nicer if the remote was lighted. After less than six months, the unit will no longer play any disks. I phoned LG and a technician there walked me through an evaluation of the unit and said that it would have to come in for repair. The unit still works as a receiver for Netflix but anything that goes into the disk drive (the Blu-Ray player) is not recognized. The movie function is “grayed out” on the menu screen. There is nothing in the manual and nothing online about this problem but I definitely had the notion after talking with the technician that they have lots of problems with this issue of the Blu-ray disk portion of the unit breaking down. Considering what I paid, it seems to me that this unit should last longer before it breaks down. I didn’t get an extended warranty, so the cost for repair is at least .00. The unit has a one year warranty, but so what? It shouldn’t be in need of repair this quickly, especially since it isn’t used all that often.

My recommendation: look for another brand.
